Poetry: Still; Praying

I am always looking
at a portrait of you
drawn or photographed
smiling down at me

Most days I still find you
alive and well in this room
either catching your breath
or dancing along

to a melody in your head
as I watch from the hallway
with both hands clasped
in a fervent prayer

Even now I plead with God
with the same request
that we could be—
that I could be happy
